Definitions (SNMP)

Before we continue, we should provide a few definitions, to clarify their use in this documentation.

An "OID" refers to an "object identifier". In the SNMP context, This traditionally means the actual address of a settable "object" in the SNMP tree. Although OID most correctly means the identifier itself, and not the object, we at times may say something like "write to the OID", which should be interpreted as writing to the object referred to by the OID, not the OID itself.
